Conversation: Stage a Business Coup

4/17/2005

Barry Moltz, Entrepreneur, Author, Angel We keep pushing the envelope to try new things here at SMB TrendWire. Ever heard of an author’s reading? That’s where the author of a book reads some of his or her work.

We thought a short author’s reading would make a great podcast!

So we are delighted to bring you an author’s reading — from author, entrepreneur and angel investor Barry Moltz.

Barry does a reading of a piece he wrote specifically for listeners/readers of SMB TrendWire called “Stage a Business Coup.” He also gives the “backstory” behind the story — why he wrote it and how it stems from his real life experiences.

Barry is the author of You Need to Be A Little Crazy: The Truth about Starting and Growing Your Business.” This is an extremely useful book, besides being entertaining (I’ve read it and liked it a lot). It describes the crazy ups and downs and emotional trials of running a business. It must be popular, because it is in its fourth reprint and has been translated into Chinese, Russian, Korean and Thai.

Barry is also an entrepreneur and angel investor. He has received numerous awards such as Angel of the Year and was inducted into the Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame.

Conversation: IT Security - You Have to Take it Seriously

4/11/2005

Michael Dees, IT Security ExpertInformation technology security expert Michael Dees gives a great presentation about IT Security issues important to small businesses.

Michael’s company, eSecurity Direct, helps small and midsize businesses manage their technology infrastructure. They specialize in helping offices with as few as 5 computers, all the way up to locations with several hundred computers.

He manages to achieve an awesome feat: make IT security interesting. I was so engrossed in his talk that I hated to have it end.

In addition to covering the basics about viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spybots and hackers, he also covered:

  • one-time use credit cards
  • protecting your information “Crown Jewels”
  • utilizing something called “Unified Threat Protection”
  • Michael also identifies the top four anti-virus providers. And he gives some practical tips for protecting your business and personal information.

Michael himself has many years of experience providing technology infrastructure and security solutions to some of America’s largest corporations. He has been a guest lecturer at the Weatherhead School of Management and a featured presenter on the U.S. Secret Service-sponsored Northern Ohio Information Technology Roundtable (NOITR).
