Conversation: Building Small Businesses That Learn, Lead and Last

8/2/2005

Ever wondered why so many business strategies fail? Is it because the strategy was bad? No! says our most recent guest.

The problem with most business strategy is executing it, says Gary Harpst, CEO and founder of Six Disciplines.

Gary Harpst, Entrepreneur and Founder of Six DisciplinesGary is an exceedingly successful entrepreneur.

Listen to our 55-minute podcast Conversation and you will discover that he started a software company called Solomon Software roughly a quarter century ago. Over the years he grew that business until in 2000 it was purchased by Great Plains Software. Soon thereafter the company he founded in the small city of Findlay, Ohio, USA became part of Microsoft when Great Plains was itself acquired.

Along the way Gary says he made many business mistakes. And like any successful entrepreneur, those mistakes were some of his most valuable — albeit painful — lessons. What he learned he decided to use to build a system to mentor and grow other entrepreneurs and business owners.

The result is Six Disciplines. After investing over $10 million and nearly five years of development, Six Disciplines is like nothing else you’ve seen for small businesses. It’s part methodology (business processes), part technology (Internet-based software to manage a small business), and part coaching (someone who helps the business owner learn and stay on track).

If you have a chance to listen to only one small business podcast, you definitely want to listen to Gary Harpst. There is nothing like Six Disciplines and I guarantee you will get a tremendous amount out of his talk.

More Small Business Audio Content Coming!

I’ll bet you thought this was a dead site, huh? No updates in two months…nothing new to feed your newsreader. Just another blog to add to the graveyard of abandoned blog sites, right?

Wrong.

We’ve been busy behind the scenes.

  • We have created some great new small business content which we will be posting shortly. Look for it — you’ll love it!
  • We upgraded this site to version 1.5.1.1 of WordPress. I’m becoming a big fan of WordPress for general blogging and content management software. This newest version makes it even more user-friendly.
  • We’ve made some improvements (we hope you agree!) to the design. The header image is more uplifting and the colors lightened up. The site seems less foreboding and a little easier on the eye. Lisa Sabin at Elegant Webscapes did a nice job. Let us know what you think.
  • We have added considerable bandwidth to the site. The content continues to be extremely popular, with regular repeat visitors and downloads for each recording. I have been listing the content in the new podcast directories that keep popping up, and listing it in my newsletter, which leads to regular ongoing demand. Unlike most podcast content, in the case of some of the recordings, listenership actually has increased with each new month.
  • Effective August 1st we have eliminated the streaming version of the content in favor of the MP3 files. We found that nearly 90% of visitors downloaded the MP3 files instead of streaming the content. You can still listen to the audio files directly from your computer, but you need to take a few moments to download them first.
  • We still have work to do. I have to change over each of the existing event pages manually to the new design and format, and I am only part way finished. So if you run into pages with the old design or that still have “streaming” links, for the next few days, please bear with us.

I hope you enjoy the changes and the new small business content coming soon!
