NYPD Now Podcasting

9/20/2005

OK, now we’ve seen it all: the New York City Police Department is now podcasting. From an article in Red Herring comes this description:

“The New York City Police Department has put out an APB on all iPods and MP3 players in the Big Apple and wants their owners to download its podcast that includes traffic alerts and crime prevention messages.

The first podcast, which debuted on the NYPD’s web site Wednesday, included a traffic alert related to street closures around the United Nations headquarters, where world leaders were visiting to mark the institution’s 60th anniversary. The podcast also included an advisory on identity theft and news on assistance from 300 NYPD officers sent to the Gulf Coast to aid in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

‘We intend to use this for crime prevention messages, for counterterrorism messages, for recognition of police officers who are doing a good job,’ said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly in an interview with the television station NY1.

He added that the NYPD was also considering releasing a podcast in Spanish.”

Just in case you thought podcasts were just for teenagers and people in their pajamas writing blogs….
