Are Business Podcasts on Your “Reading” List?

12/11/2006

I was just tickled to see that Anne-Marie Nichols has Small Business Trends Radio on her reading, er listening, list. She writes:

More and more business gurus from Belinda Ellsworth to Jack Canfield say to read one book a week to improve your life or get more knowledgeable about your business.

Why keep it to books? How about blogs and podcasts, too?

Hear, hear! That sounds like a splendid idea, Anne-Marie, to have podcasts on your list of business material to consume. Thank you for including us.

Audio podcasts fill a need for times when we either don’t want to read or can’t read, such as when we are exercising. Finally the cost structure has come down to the point that audio can be recorded and distributed quickly and inexpensively, and can be listened to easily. Net result: more audio more widely available for all.

Podcast Review: Accounting Best Practices

Podcast Review

This week’s Podcast Review is about the Accounting Best Practices Podcast.

Description: Steve Bragg and Ralph Nach cover a broad range of accounting topics once every two weeks, including the latest accounting rules issued by the FASB, SEC, and AICPA. Steve continues with lectures that so far cover control systems and the fast close, and which will address many additional accounting management issues in the future. Steve then closes with an accounting best practices tip.

Comments: I know this may sound like a boring podcast but it is not. The information is very good and Steve and Ralph really bring an almost entertaining way of presenting what some would find to be a dry topic.

The podcasts are of a high sound quality and done in an interview format with a professional introduction.

There are 26 podcasts so far covering topics such as:

- Private company reporting
- Controls for payroll
- Credit and collection reports
- Stock option back dating, part 1
- Changes to credit policy

There are usually 3 topics covered per podcast meaning there are a total of 78 so far and are organized into three main categories, GAAP, lecture and best practices.

Pluses: Like all good podcasts the content here is first rate, as it has to be as the advice provided is critical.

The website makes it very easy to subscribe and more importantly you can see a snapshot summary of each podcast in one table. This makes it very easy for the listener to go directly to the content the want.

You then click on a link that takes you to a separate page for each show and provides more details on the show and enables listening or file download.

Minuses: Only a couple of items here, the length of the shows is not listed and the audio does not play immediately if I am listening on my PC, you have to wait for the file to download before playing begins.

Recommendation: I found the content very helpful even though I am not an accountant. Some of the information shared is supportive of various financial strategies a company may undertake. If financial knowledge is important to your business then I would suggest giving Accounting Best Practices a listen.

12/7/2006

warren2.jpgA new year is coming and it is time to start planning and visioning for what you want to accomplish and how you want to accomplish it in 2007.

Our guest in this week’s show is Warren Greshes, of The Greshes Network. Warren outlines the key elements of an effective written goal and action plan that is sure to help you have a successful 2007.

The real value in this program is that Warren is very prescriptive in describing HOW to go about making this goal and action plan. We all know we should do it but struggle with how to begin and how to finish.

Podcast Review: StartupNation Podcasts

12/4/2006

Podcast Review

This week’s Podcast Review is about the StartupNation Podcast featuring the Sloan brothers, Jeff and Rich.

Description: StartupNation Radio, hosted by lifetime entrepreneurs, the Sloan brothers, provide in-the-trenches expertise on how to start and grow your dream business. Topics include: starting an eBay business, financing your business, marketing your invention, and much more.

Comments: This content packed podcast has so much content they have broken it down into four different categories:

- StartupNation Radio
- Entrepreneurs
- Technology
- StartupNation Community

Each category focuses on a different aspect of support, information and advice for small businesses.

Production values are very high with this podcast including, music, sound cuts, a professional announcer introduction and more. Sound quality is good and the brothers are energetic and entertaining hosts.

There are sponsors spots and commercial messages in the show but they are fairly short and non-obtrusive. Podcasts are 20-30 minutes in length and vary in format from brother to brother dialogue to guest interviews.

Pluses: Content, content, content, you will find relevant, specific and helpful information advice and resource information in each podcast available.

I like how they have grouped the multiple podcasts into categories, the website is clean, show descriptions come in short and long form, and links to subscribe are clearly marked.

Minuses: Only two comments here, I wish the audio would play quicker when I want to listen to the podcast on my PC, unfortunately you have to wait for it download to begin playing. Secondly I wish the length of the show was listed.

Recommendation: In my opinion this is one of the best podcasts available for small business because of the ease of access and the wide range of valuable information. I suggest you add the StartupNation Podcast to your list of must listen audio.

Take a listen to a 5-minute sample below.
