Facebook: Online Business Marketing, Advanced Tactics

Back by popular demand, Shama Hyder, Founder of Click To Client, is joining host, Anita Campbell, for an in-depth look at some advanced tactics to market your business online using the popular social media site, Facebook.

Facebook: Online Business Marketing, Advanced TacticsShama is no stranger to the Small Business Trends Radio Show. Her first appearance was a hit titled: How To Use Facebook To Market Your Business.

So we invited Shama back for this special “Part 2” episode tutorial to share some of the more advanced marketing tactics that you can use as a member of Facebook to expand your company’s visibility.

Below are some of the topics Shama and Anita discuss:

  • Facebook demographics — Participants are fast growing. There are now some 115 million users on Facebook with approximately 35 million of them being US residents. But surprisingly, the fastest growing segment consists of women over the age of 55. Currently, one quarter of members are 35 and over and teenagers only account for about 12% of facebook members.
  • Facebook pages — These are great for SEO purposes. Google indexes Facebook pages and, as a result, the pages show in search queries and can ultimately direct traffic to your site.
  • Facebook groups — These are a fun place to provide value, information and interact with others. A group allows you to create a platform around yourself and/or your brand and build a thriving community. Placing content once a week is ideal due to the fact that Facebook show groups in two categories, most popular and recently updated. Keep yours at the top by updating regularly.
  • Grow your Facebook contacts the right way — Don’t make friends simply for the sake of increasing your numbers. Look around for friends from other social media sites that may also be on Facebook and connect there as well. Use the “friend finder” feature and search for contacts you’ve met at events or done business with previously.

In addition, Shama discusses:

  • What you should (and should not) put on your profile page — Applications, information, etc.
  • How and when to interlace social media sites within Facebook —, Twitter, Friendfeed, etc.
  • Facebook applications — How, when and if you should use them.
  • Using the Twitter application — When and if you should use it.

Currently, one quarter of members are 35 and over and teenagers only account for about 12% of facebook members. -> I believe most of the teenagers still find myspace and friendster hit for them.

  2. Amanda Says:

I picked up a lot of helpful tips in this interview. Now, all I have to do is apply them. πŸ™‚

  3. Arthur Bland Says:

Using the Twitter application in facebook somehow annoys me because it feels like reading really in an “off style” manner. Well, I would spend time listening to this interview so I will learn what Shama has to say about this.

  4. Heather Smith Says:

Do you think FACEBOOK is appropriate for a professional business. Sure I have joined up on the facebook page with the ‘puppy training school’ but I offer professional services – I am an accounting consultant to small businesses – will FACEBOOK taint a professional image?

  5. Mary Grace Ignacio Says:

Hi Heather, I believe it can be. I listened to Shama’s previous interview about facebook and one thing she really emphasized is building relationship. Tainting a professional image in facebook is controlled by you and your connections.

She even sighted one interesting fact about facebook — that facebook is “best in mids” than other social media sites. Say for example MySpace and LinkedIn. MySpace is too personal and on the other hand, LinkedIn is too professional. What Facebook does is, that it combines the best of the two. πŸ˜‰

  6. Martin Lindeskog Says:

I think you should a have a mix of different social media tools. The thing is that I could see patterns that the different sites are copying each other. Take for example, “what are you doing right now?” prompt in Twitter. Now you could write similar status message on Facebook and LinkedIn. I use Facebook to connect with old friends, keeping in touch with people and finding new individuals interested in a rational philosophy.

Shama Hyder: Have you read Steven Tylock’s The LinkedIn Personal Trainer book?

  7. Shama Hyder Says:

    Hey Guys,

So glad you enjoyed this one!

Bianca – You are right. MySpace still has a good pool of teenagers.

Amanda – Don’t let it overwhelm you. Just pick one or two tactics and apply them!

Heather- Absolutely! FB is totally appropriate. Like Grace mentioned, you have control over the image you project. And it is okay to below to a “I love puppies” group. FB is great for letting your personality shine through. After all, people do business with people they like!

Martin – A mix is a great idea. Most social media tools have their particular advantages. I haven’t read Steven’s book. I take it that it is good? = )

  8. Mary Grace Ignacio Says:

Shama, thanks for the mention. I love your previous interview. I will still have to listen to this one! πŸ˜‰

  9. Mary Grace Ignacio Says:

Btw, adding friends just for the sake of increasing the number defeats the purpose of being social. If you just care for numbers, I don’t think you could still care to interact.

  10. Martin Lindeskog Says:

Shama: I haven’t read it yet. I have to get it first! πŸ˜‰

Mary Grace: You are right on the money. It is about quality, not the quantity.
