Small Businesses – Carrying A Heavy Regulatory Burden

Andrew Langer on Small Business - Carrying A Heavy Regulatory Burden Are you having trouble sifting through the many rules and regulations to ensure your small business is in compliance?

Taxes, licenses, HIPA, ADA, FMLA, EPA, trademarks, copyrights, patents, zoning, consumer product safety are just a few of the many rules and regulations that a small business needs to be aware of in order to ensure compliance and the continued viability of their business.

Our featured guest in this episode of Small Business Trends Radio, Andrew Langer, is the manager of regulatory policy for the National Federation of Independent Business, the leading small-business advocacy group in the United States. He is responsible for protecting the interests of small business in the face of an ever-increasing burden from regulatory agencies, as well the protection of the private property rights of small business owners.

Among the points in the show are:

  • Last year Americans spent over 1.1 trillion dollars on regulatory compliance. Business owners spent 8.8 billion hours filling out the paperwork associated with this. At an estimate of approximately $50/hr. to fill this paperwork out, that means that Americans spent 410 billion dollars filling out compliance paperwork.
  • To improve the situation for small business owners, the NFIB is giving business the tools it needs to assist in compliance through a new website that offers simple and easy to understand terms with an emphasis on assisting in compliance.
  • Help can be found through participation in compliance assistance programs. Organizations such as OSHA are offering free on-site consultations that are promised not to be enforcement inspections. Once you have completed this program a certificate is provided and discounts may be offered by insurance companies and the like, resulting in large savings discounts.

Today’s Trend: In addition to the above points, please stay tuned at the end of the program to the Today’s Trend segment.
